Providing leadership for the numerous Grenztruppen patrols and guard posts was the Postenfuehrer, or Post Leader. These soldiers were considered reliable and skilled soldiers and were entrusted in overseeing patrols or guard posts in the border area. In addition to being in charge of the posts, they also gave the patrol orders and determined details such as direction of observation, weapon employment, how to handle arrests, questioning, tactical techniques,  signals, and various other facets of a patrol or security post. He was also responsible for maintaining communications with the border section commander. Above all, the Post Leader was responsible for the safety of his patrol members, as well as ensuring they didn't try to escape.

To become a Postenfuhrer a soldier was generally a Gefrieter or higher although the Border Guard Handbook stated a Sergeant or higher was required. In addition to being tactically proficient and reliable, a soldier was also required to pass a Postenfuehrer certification test. To signify their positions of authority the Post Leader wore green tabs on the shoulder boards much like the leadership tabs utilized in the U.S. Army.
