NVA Engineer units working the
minefields used a variety of equipment to lay mines and to clear the
minefields. The two most common tracked vehicles used were the AT-T
tractor and a engineer vehicle using the tank chassis of a T-54/55 tank.
Both vehicles were used to clear minefields by attaching mines rollers.
In addition to its mine clearing capabilities, the AT-T was also used
lay mines. Another
workhorse in the minefields were tractors. In addition to their normal
earth moving activities, these tractors were also used to help detonate
mines. By attaching a special metal screen to the front of the tractor,
the operator was able keep debris from scattering as the mines were detonated
by lowering the screen over the land mines prior to detonation.
Another use of the tractors involved attaching a platform to the front of
the tractor. From this platform engineers could be elevated over the
minefield so they could probe or prepare mines for detonation. |
