Below are
a few of the victims of
the border minefields.
April 8, 1971
An 18 year old boy attempts to escape to the West
through a minefield in the vicinity of Schwickershausen. His foot is
shredded after triggering a mine. On May 4, over a month and several operations
after his injury, he dies.
January 16, 1973
A 26 year old male from the East German village
of Bluetlingen triggers an SM-70 fence mine as climbs the Wall. He manages to
reach West Germany but dies in a hospital the next day.
July 14, 1973
A 25 tear old male triggers three SM-70 fence mines as he
attempts to climb to freedom in the vicinity of Hohegeiss/Harz.
Seriously wounded, he is pulled by his feet away from the fence and is loaded
into a truck by border guards. Two hours later he receives medical
attention but dies the following day in an East German hospital.
April 7, 1980 A 28 year
old male is critically wounded by a fence mine near the town of Veltheim. He
dies on May 11 after numerous operations in a Halberstadt hospital. March
22, 1984 A 20 year old male is mortally wounded by a
fence mine. He dies as border guards arrive to investigate.
