CommentsThank god this sit is finally here. I have never found such a great and informative web page about the border guards of East Germany. Very well done and is very commend. john B.G. Collecting six wonderful years
CommentsTed Great site, looking forward to portion on US units. Glad someone took the bull by the horns and is showing what a vital portion of the Cold War was really like, Glynn
CommentsOutstanding! It seems I have pictures of the same border guards. How did I get so lucky? It must be that I was stationed with an outstanding office! Great job Ted. I hope the memory lives on. SFC Stanley E. Dodson, Jr. Colorado Springs, Colorado 11th Cav., Bad Kissingen Germany, 1982-1985
CommentsExcellent, well thought out site. This should be a valuable tool to students of the cold war. Adam Summers, Army Brat B.K. West Germany 1983-1986

CommentsWow, Ted! Your research and site are very impressive. Cindy C.
CommentsOh, sure. Don't mention your dedicated driver in the acknowledgements. Ted, Great job on the site. I am proud to have served with you as my commander on the Grenze. You should have a section on the great Mess hall we had at Camp Lee. Remember how they would get up at 0100 to feed late patrols upon their return to camp. I should be finished with the Return to Fulda documentary by the end of summer. Perhaps you could promote the film through your site. Take care, Stephen Perry Sp/4 2/11th ACR 1984-86
CommentsExcellent Page, Greetings from a former NVA engineer officer, who was 1984 on the "line" near Sonneberg to sweeping some of the minefields. Juergen 1./PiB-11 1982-1986 Webmaster of http://www.pib-11.de Webmaster note: Visit Juergen's site for more information about the NVA engineers.
CommentsI served in 3/7 Cav of the 3ID from 72-74. We went to Coburg twice and once to a camp near Hof? I don't recall the name of the camp but it was definately a decent place to work from. If anyone has stories like I recall, let me know. Some, obviously are quite funny. Thanks for the site as a lot of us spent some time on the border. David Zuber California
CommentsAn outstanding work that can be expanded to cover more in depth. I have passed along your URL to all the former Grenzers that I am in touch with. Most do not have much of a command of the English language. I have numerous original photos taken by the GBK, if you are interested in posting some let me know. The last time I was up close and personal with the GT, the soldier under surveilance was giving me the one finger salute! Let me know if I can contribute anything to your fine work in progress. Jeff Mack Coldwartowerrat202@yahoo.com former SGT 202 MP Company Giessen, West Germany 1980 - 1982
CommentsTed; An excellent site for a history wonk like me. I especially like your "About this Site" commentary. Keep the faith. Jack Reid
CommentsEcellent Page! Greetings from a old NVA soldier , Grenzregiment 35, Berlin-Rummelsburg who was 1966/67 on the "line" in Berlin. Richard Hebstreit rhebs@rhebs.de Luck my soldier site! http://www.rhebs.de/mauer/gr35-1.htm
CommentsVery interesting, I had never really thought about it before.
CommentsQuite cool site. I saw you guys pretty often at the Control Station Marienborn/Helmstedt (Checkpoint Alpha) passing the line on your way to Berlin. I was there at the east german security platoon from '87 to '88. Well, the Americans kept us awake when they passed the border, turned their Jeep on the highway and tried to leave the country again, which was illegal. But they learned something as well: A barrier closes faster than a Jeep can pass half a mile ;) Anyways, I'm glad that it is over, that I have girlfriend in Florida now, that Americans build websites about the former border and that I can build a website about US military aviation. Go ahead with your great job and good luck, Peter. http://www.globemaster.de/

CommentsHi Ted, What a pleasure it has been visiting your site! My husband served 1961-64/Kitsingen/10th Engineers/C Co. I'm sure he will enjoy his visit here also. Kathy kaa@accessus.net http://communities.msn.com/MomsMilitaryMarket http://pub10.bravenet.com/freelink/show.php?usernum=776941441
CommentsAn outstanding sight! Attention all 11th ACR "Blackhorse" Border troopers. The Border Legion Chapter of the Blackhorse Association is up and running again. I would like to encourage all border-era troopers to sign up. Sign up your buddies too! Check out the Blackhorse website at: www.11thacr-bha.org Allons! Jeremy Dobos
CommentsForgot to mention, for all who are interested, there is a Border Legion Reunion planned for summer 2003. I'll post more information as it becomes available. The May 2000 Border Legion Reunion in Fulda had over 400 in attendance, and this one will be even better. Allons! Jeremy Dobos
CommentsTed, Great work on the site. The foundation you have created will go along way in presenting the history of the Blackhorse Regiment to all the world. Our great troopers deserve this recognition for the role they played in closing the Cold War chapter of our Nation's history. Well done!! CommentsYour site is very informative, and exciting. You guys put your lives on the line each and every day. Most people has heard of the iron curtain, but very few really knew anything about it or what our military actually did during that period of time, and they didn't know it was a very dangerous assignment to be there. I am proud of all who served there and they were hero's and brave men who did their job,and went almost unnoticed by the general public. Thanks to all of you, glad you have this site, people need to know of the great deeds our men and women in uniform did during the cold war, especially of the Warriors at the border of E.&W. Germany. I SALUTE each one of you. Be Proud Soldier.
CommentsGreat site and a service to all who patrolled the grenze. Tom Molino (Cdr C Troop 2ACR 1974-76; Cdr 2/2ACR 1982-84; and 67th Colonel of the Regiment)
CommentsT.D. have not had a chance to look through the entire web site, but what I have seen is a real tribute to you and the great troopers who spent their years patrolling the border. Thanks for the memories. John Eberle, 66th COL, 2ACR - eberlej@saic.com, 407-207-2797
CommentsWONDERFUL SITE, I WAS WITH THE 14TH CAV C TROOP FROM 1960-1964 IN FULDA. REALLY ENJOYED YOUR SITE AND TOLD SEVERAL PEOPLE LLOYD BROOKS
CommentsGreat site Ted really brings back some fond and scary memories of my tour with the 14th ACR. I still visit Fulda almost every year as I married a wonderful German woman from Heidelberg. But still Fulda is like a second home to me. The reunion last year was great with the 11th ACR. I was reunited with some old friends I have not seen since 1969. Sergeant Tom Fortune Hq Trp 1st Sqdn 14th Armored Cavalry. 1967 to 1969. I am proud to be a member of the 14th ACR Association.
CommentsTed, Thank you for your labor of love. Your work has obviously taken a lot of time and effort. It is very meaningful and an important part of history that needs to be shared. I will be passing on your web site address to everyone that I know. I had the opportunity to serve in both the 14th as well as the 11th ACR many years ago, both in Bad Hersfeld and in Fulda. Your web site has brought back memories of many times on the border. In particular a Christmas 1970 3 day North Patrol between OP India and OP Oscar (which was about 300 meters in the BAOR sector). My wife, Gabriele is from Bad Hersfeld and we get back to Germany frequently. I also noted a earlier message from one of your guys. He is making a promotional video "Return to Fulda". I believe that he and I met during the reunion in May 2000. I would be very interested in ordering a copy of his documentary. We had talked about the videos that we were both making, but I guess, we just lost touch with one another. I have been working with the Fulda 2000 Reunion committee and the Blackhorse Association over the past 10 months to prepare reunion videos. It's unfortunate that we lost touch with one another. We should have colaborated on a joint production. Two editions of the Fulda 2000 Reunion Video are now also available to be ordered from Cpt Jeremy Dobos, Executive Secretary of the Blackhorse Association. Check out the Blackhorse Association Web Site for more details. Thanks again for your great efforts! Suivez Moi/Allons! CommentsI was in HHT 11th ACR from 1972 to 1975. I was stationed in Fulda and was a Redeye missile teamchief. I joined the Black Horse Association for one year 1975. I have just accessed the Association website, searching to see if there was indeed such a site after reading the publicity on Sec. of Army White. Sgt. Mike Harden
CommentsExcellent, very interesting.
CommentsAll I can say is, It's about time something like this was done. I pulled a lot of border duty in 21/2 years with the 1st platoon B Troop 2nd ACR. Dec.71-June74
Well done!!! This brings back many memories for me. I remember my first border op...GSR...until then I never new anything about the borders except Berlin. My first op was at the TZP, to see the fence and lights of the then DDR and the cold darkness of Czech. made me feel glad I was on the West side of the stones! I could never imagine the life of the people that were on the other side. If I locate any photos of the patrols I was part of, I'll send them your way. Thanks for keeping the memories alive!! CommentsGreat site! My Scout Platoon (Red Fox) from F/2 joined the E/2 scouts for the November 1989 tour whilst all of our tankers were conducting M1/M1A1 rollover. Boy, did the tankers miss the greatest tour ever. I got to stand on the border at the Rodach crossing near Coburg as the East Germans began driving the Trabis across. I got to shake the hand of an East German border guard who I had seen several times before. The East German old women would jump out of their cars and come give us a big hug. One of the fondest memories of my life. Thanks for remembering and helping me remember. Toujour Pret, T J Linzy

CommentsTed- Excellent site. It's hard to pass the stories on to people who don't remember the "politically sensitive East/West German border." I did quite a few tours to Camp Hof '85-'88 with G and H 2ACR. Thanks for refreshing the memories. Mike Wieczorek

CommentsGreat site. Brings back memories of patrolling the border from a helicopter. I served in 4/2 ACR from 1988- 1991, and logged over 700 hours in the back seat of helicopters )both OH-58 and uh/eh-60s as a Czech linguist. Those were the best years of my (short, so far) life!! CommentsI WAS THERE WITH 3/11 ACR FROM AUG 81 - JUNE 84. I SAW THAT BORDER A LOT. WHAT I SAW WERE FAMILIES TORN APART. GRAND PARENTS LOOKING ACROSS THE FENCE TRYING TO SEE THEIR GRAND KIDS! YOU TRY TO STAND THERE AND NOT WANT TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! I SAW AND FELT THESE EMOTIONS AS WELL AS THE COLD STAND OFF BETWEEN US AND THE SOVIET BLOCK FORCES. WE BOTH WATCHED EACH OTHER FOR ANY MISS STEP OR INDICATION OF EITHER OF US WERE GOING TO ATTACK THE OTHER. I ALSO SAW LATER HOW SHOCKED SOME OF THE EAST GERMAN OFFICERS WERE WHEN WE ADMITTED TO ALLOWING OUR ON DUTY FORCE PERCENTAGE TO DROP DURING THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS, WHICH THEY COULDN'T DO BECAUSE THEY WERE CONVINCED WE WOULD ATTACK THEM. WE WERE BOTH DOING WHAT OUR GOVERNMENTS REQUIRED AND DOING THE BEST JOB WE KNEW HOW. PLANNING FOR THE WORST, PRACTICING THE DRILLS WE NEEDED TO KEEP OUR SKILLS HONED FOR BATTLE, BUT HOPING NEVER TO HAVE TO UNLEASH THE POWERFUL WEAPONS WE WERE ENTRUSTED WITH. DRJ

CommentsTed, this is a great tribute to all the soldiers that have served our country and the families that supported them. Having lived that experience first hand as the wife of one of those soldiers, this site brings back great memories of the close comradery being part of the Blackhorse brought to all of us that were there, not just the soldiers, but the families as well. Keep up the great work and a special thanks to you for acknowledging the young soldiers that are serving in Bosnia, Kosovo, Macedonia and anywhere else in the world they may be stationed. dp

Have a bunch of slides if you need a few more towers, SM-70's, etc. Could scan them. My daughter is doing a research project on the "real" border right now.
