Music Corps

Within the NVA there were 23 bands known as the Stabsmusikkorps. These bands were divided between the various armed services of the East German military, of which five represented the Grenztruppen commands. The Grenztruppen military bands and their locations were:
  • The Grenztruppen Band - Erfurt
  • The Border Command North Band - Magdeburg
  • The Border Command Central Band - Berlin
  • The Border Command South Band -  Rudolstadt
  • The Grenztruppen Officer's School Band  - Plauen/Suhl

Additionally, a jazz and dance band known as the "Erich Weinert Ensemble" was available for all services of the East German military.

Musicians within the East German military were trained at the Military Music School initially in the city of Prora and later in Ruegen. Grenztruppen Musik Korps record albums and cassette tapes are still available today thru auction sites such as Ebay or militaria dealers.
