While
conscripts provided the manpower
for the border service, the continuity and
professionalism of the Grenztruppen rested on the shoulders of two types
of career soldiers. These professional solders were Term Enlistees and
Career soldiers.
Term Enlistees. These soldiers were volunteers who enlisted for three year terms. Officers who served in this capacity were usually technical specialists and would serve two years active duty and the remaining year as a Reserve Officer. Career Soldiers: These long-term soldiers comprised the bulk of the leadership within the Grenztruppen. Included in this category were Officers, Warrant Officers, and NCOs. Training for the career soldiers included the Grenztruppen service academies as well as advanced training at the Friedrich Engels Academy or advanced technical schools in the Soviet Union.
