Bunkers

Border bunker

Throughout the border area and Berlin were about 800 bunkers used by the Grenztruppen for observation and firing positions. Most of these bunkers, which were constructed of concrete, were commonly situated near the border fence or within the 500 Meter Zone.  These bunkers could house a single soldier comfortably but were probably made for two soldiers since the Grenztruppen always performed their duties in pairs.

Not all the bunkers, though, were made for just a few soldiers. In some cases large, underground bunkers (photo below) were utilized by the Grenztruppen. These structures probably served as underground command centers in the event of alerts or attacks.

In addition to Grenztruppen bunkers, the Soviet also maintained bunkers in some areas.

Where are they today?
Bunkers can still be seen today along the former border. Some have been incorporated into museums and memorials and access into the small bunkers is usually permitted. The larger underground bunkers are usually locked.
